Special Labs and Equipments:
A Biometrical Genetics Lab. and a Molecular Genetics Lab. are in operation. A herd of 100 crossbred cattle is maintained by this department for teaching and experimental purposes. For proper interpretation of results, huge bulk of data accumulated at various Government Livestock Farms is being analyzed to effect further improvement in animals maintained there. Interdisciplinary research studies with various departments in the University and with Government Livestock Experiment Stations are underway.
The department maintains a dairy Lab., a meat Lab., and a wool Lab. The department is running two Livestock Experiment Stations: 1) LES-I (main campus) 2) LES-II (Proka, 15 km away from University main campus) At both the stations experimental herds of Nili-Ravi buffaloes and Sahiwal cattle and a flock of sheep and goats are maintained for postgraduate research purposes. A small horse Unit kept at the LES-I is used for equitation courses and tent pegging. Research is mainly oriented towards studying economical and sustainable systems of livestock and fodder production
A fully equipped Lab. is available for teaching and research. A Poultry Research Center for teaching and research is an important component of the department. This center provides seed stock (hatching eggs), day-old chicks and breeding stock to poultry farmers. Environment controlled housing and systems to combat heat stress on birds also exist in the department.
