Teaching Departments
1). Department of Animal Breeding & Genetics
This department has devoted itself to acquire and impart the latest scientific knowledge to the students on different aspects of animal breeding and genetics. Ten undergraduate and 15 postgraduate courses are offered. So far 95 postgraduates including 7 Ph.Ds have been produced.
2). Department of Livestock Management
The Department of Livestock Management was established in 1961 when Faculty of Animal Husbandry came in to being. It is actively engaged in imparting instructional matter to students concerning management, production and behaviour of | |||

farm animals both at under- and postgraduate levels. One hundred and two postgraduates including 7 PhD have been produced so far. More than 10 short courses in addition to 26 under- and postgraduate courses are offered regularly. A popular course on horse riding is offered twice a year. The department has held several national and international level training courses on dairying. More than half a dozen teachers of this department have been able to earn research grants from foreign agencies viz., FAO, ACIAR, PARC, PARB, DFID (HEL), NPO (APO). Recently, the Department has established a Higher Education Link with University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, England through British Council.
3). Department of Poultry Husbandry
The functions of teaching, research and extension are the main focus of the department of Poultry Husbandry; moreover, the department offers 20 undergraduate and 14 postgraduate courses. Courses designed for short training in husbandry practices are offered for interested farmers. The short courses are also offered to army personnels regarding management and feeding practices in poultry. At present 13 M. Sc. (Hons.) and 12 Ph.D. students are enrolled for postgraduate degree programme. Whereas, 128 M.Sc.(Hons.) and 12 Ph.D. degrees have so far been awarded. Research oriented to the problems related to poultry farming community is the main priority. Hatching quality and embryonated eggs are provided to various departments of the university to assist their research project both at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The department also provides day-old chicks to interested farmers to improve the production of eggs and meat for the masses. As an income generating activity, a semi-commercial poultry project is also being run at the Poultry Research Centre. Besides these activities eggs and meat are also being supplied to the university employees, at comparatively cheaper rates than market. To increase the efficiency of production and for better managemental practices, the staff members of the department are also involved in the designing and fabrication of various useful equipments. An automatic feeding system which is helpful in feeding management (controlled feeding program) of poultry birds has been installed and is being evaluated on the basis of economics and efficiency. Use of this device will help in saving labour and time and alleviating stress on poultry birds. 4). Institute of Animal Nutrition & Feed Technology
This Department has a very strong teaching and research program. So far 375 postgraduates including 25 Ph.Ds have been produced. Thirty-two under-and postgraduate courses are offered to students of various degree programs. The department has five well-equipped teaching and research Labs. Sophisticated equipment such as amino acid analyzer, gas chromatograph, and atomic absorption spectrophotometer are also used by students of various University departments. Various farm animal species are available for research purposes at the Animal Nutrition Research Center. A Lab. for in vitro research trials and a biotechnology Lab. have been recently set up in the department.
