Department of Livestock Management

This department is actively engaged in imparting instructional matter to students concerning management, production and behavior of farm animals both at under- and postgraduate levels. Ninety-nine postgraduates including 7 Ph.D. have been produced so far. Many short courses in addition to 26 under- and postgraduate courses are offered regularly. A popular course on horse riding is offered twice a year. The department has held several national and international level training courses on dairying. More than half a dozen teachers of this department have been able to earn research grants from foreign agencies. Recently, the department has established a Higher Education Link with University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, England through British Council.

The department has a dairy Lab., a meat Lab., and a wool Lab. It maintains an experimental herd of Nili-Ravi buffaloes and Sahiwal cows and a flock of sheep and goats at the Livestock Experiment Station (LES), University Campus. A small horse Unit kept at the LES serves the purpose of practical training in horse riding and tent pegging. The department has a research station located about 10.0 km away from University campus, where mainly dry animals and young stock are maintained. Research is mainly oriented towards studying economical and sustainable systems of livestock and fodder production.

Ø Participatory rural development; under Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Poverty Alleviation Program
Ø Small holders livestock and fodder production/preservation; Farming System (FSR) Program.
Ø Economic losses due to animal diseases in Punjab.
Ø Effect of heat stress on milk production in buffaloes.
Ø Propagation of Mott grass (multicut hybrid fodder).
Ø Utilization of forage shrubs and trees on marginal lands for Livestock production.
Ø Productive and reproductive potential of camel as dairy and meat animal.

PAKISTAN CAMEL AND EQUINE SOCIETY (PACES)

Unfortunately, in Pakistan work on these species is scanty and information are scrawny. Hence, it was felt that a forum must be established to provide center where scientists working in these fields could exchange their ideas, views and scientific work with aims to solve the problems of camel and equine industry and to bring it at par with the international level. The Department of Livestock Management is the only department who is working and rendering services in Animal production, management and welfare sectors. This Department has been offering courses on camel, equine and draught animal power for the last many decades at under and post graduate levels and conducting research.
Therefore, the Department of Livestock Management, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan has taken initiative and established "Pakistan Camel and Equine Society" (PACES). The objectives of the society are given below;
Pakistan is supporting a huge population of 4.1, 0.8, 0.3 and 0.2 millions of donkeys, camels , horses and mules. All these animals' species are raised primarily for draught and game purposes and serving their functions efficiently but the scientific attention and consideration that should be received by them is always missing. Their contribution in national economy as sources of renewable energy supply (Draught Power) is nevertheless than the other animals serving the mankind. Camel apart from supplying draught power is also contributing in provision of human food items viz. milk, meat and valuable byproducts. But so far genetic potentials of camel have not been fully utilized/exploited to use it as dairy or beef animal. The same is true for donkey and mules as draught animals.

In spite of their significant share in home economy, still they are ranked at the bottom when talking scientifically.
The important role of camel and equines especially donkeys (in poor societies) have been established in global scenario and a lot of research work has been done and still going on at different international institutes

Objectives

  • To promote research activities on different aspects of production, management and welfare of camel and equine.
  • To promote collaboration between different research institutes/organizations/societies and groups working in the similar disciplines.
  • To generate baseline data about camel/equine production at national level and disseminate information to researchers, students and academic/professional purposes.
  • To prepare short courses on camel and equine production, management and welfare for better production.
  • To arrange conferences, seminars, workshops to produce scientific culture at National and international levels.
  • To arrange short international Levels, training courses for the farmers for their capacity building for better camel and Equine production

Work Completed/Facilities

Since the inception of this department, postgraduate studies have been completed on different aspects of draught animals except the camel. Recently, This department has produced the first PhD (1999) dissertation on camel production. Department has completed a UFAW (UK) project on draught animal welfare and is maintaining a Livestock Experiment Station and a well-reputed equine unit equipped with the research facilities. The Department has established a special research group "Range Livestock, Draught Power and Animal Welfare" to strengthen research on production potentials and managemental aspects of these animals using the infrastructure available in the Department. It is honor for the Department that "The Best Tent Pegging" team of province Punjab) is maintained by it.
