Introduction to the Department
The department of poultry science is imparting
the recent scientific knowledge to the students on different aspects of
poultry science like farm management broiler, layer breeding flocks, poultry
housing and environments, poultry nutrition disease prevention and control,
hatchery operation and management, poultry processing and marketing. At
present there are 12 undergraduate and 14 postgraduate courses are offered
in winter and spring semesters into various degree programmes in the
Department. Besides these courses training programs with different courses
and practical activities are also being offered under NAVTEC project, rural
home economics (girls) and LAD (108) classes. So far, the department of
Poultry Science has conferred 192 M.Sc (Hons) and 15 Ph. D degrees up till
now. Every year about 200 are produced by the Faculty of Veterinary
Sciences, they also learn basic knowledge of poultry science and practice.
In addition to these staff of the dept. of poultry science is also engaged
in imparting basic training and knowledge to the rural communities as an
extension programmes through various extension techniques.
The Department of Poultry Science has
established hi-tech poultry equipment demonstration laboratory which is a
unique laboratory of its kind in the field of poultry. The department is
also maintaining a poultry research center which includes hatchery
operations along with various farming systems. This farm is generally used
for undergraduate and postgraduate research and teaching purposes. The
department is also having programmes of inter disciplinary research studies
with other universities as well as Government institutions.
Mission
The department of poultry science has a
mission to promote knowledge of poultry science as a carrier opportunity,
disseminate and apply knowledge regarding poultry housing and equipment,
poultry farm management (breeder, layer and broiler farms), hatchery
operation and management, poultry breeding, poultry hygiene and disease
prevention, and marketing of poultry products (eggs and meat) so that the
gap between supply and demand of animal protein can be abridged in the form
of eggs and meat. It also involves addressing challenges and problems
arising day by day in the field of Poultry Science.
Objectives
1.
To produce
professionally competent manpower for uplifting poultry production in
Pakistan.
2.
Provision of
skilled manpower with up to date knowledge for sustained development of
poultry industry in Pakistan.
3.
Development of new
strains of poultry birds for efficient egg and meat production and their
dissipation to rural areas for increased egg and meat production.
4.
Development of new
strains of poultry for efficient meat production. |
