DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW The Department of Agricultural Economics is one of the premier departments of the faculty, built around the bedrock of agricultural economics section of the defunct Punjab Agricultural College in 1963. The activities of the department are threefold. It is involved in the teaching of both undergraduate and postgraduate students in the discipline of Agricultural Economics and conduction of research on the problems of national significance. At the undergraduate level, the department offers courses in all the Faculties of the university. At the postgraduate level, it offers programmes of study leading to Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees providing thereby a strong background of mathematical economics, statistics, econometrics, advanced economic theory, economic development and agricultural policy etc. to its students. |

The Department has produced three Doctor of Philosophy and over five hundred master degree holders. At present 60 students are enrolled in B.Sc. (Hons), 45 in M.Sc. (Hons), 110 in M.A Economics and 10 in Ph.D. degree programme. Students training is not limited merely to the teaching of basic and advanced concepts of subject, the students, as a matter of fact, are made to comprehend and integrate these concepts with the basic core of knowledge of other agricultural sciences in such a way that they are able to apply this knowledge to the real farm economic problems. This training encourages students to think independently of practical problems and also prepares them for handling higher job responsibilities with advantage. The Department in addition to teaching has made rapid strides in student research. Intensive training is imparted to the students with a view to enable them to achieve competence in research methodology, understanding and analyzing the farm economic problems and evaluating the economic alternatives for sound economic decisions. The whole degree programme pivots on the substratum rendered by the continuous stream of research generated through the departmental research undertakings and through support from national and international aid giving agencies. The department also provides advisory services and undertakes contractual research for public and private agencies. Vision: A viable agricultural sector as the engine of growth and development for the country ably supported and lead by the best analytical, policy research, and academic manpower produced by this department. Mission: To create and promote a cadre of skilled Agricultural Economics Analysts, Policy makers, researchers and academicians to meet the demands of modern agricultural growth and development.
