Research

 

The Department to train its students is engaged in conducting high quality research which is actively being pursued by the graduate students and teaching faculty. Research is compulsory component of MSc and Ph.D degree programmes, as a partial fulfillment of the degrees. The major areas of student research in the discipline are: livestock economics, production economics, technology transfer and adoption, economics of small farmers, agricultural policy, food security, rural development, farm economics etc. However keeping in view the limited time and financial resources at the disposal of the researchers, most of the studies were undertaken

at micro level.

 
   
     

So far as the Faculty research is concerned, the Department has conducted and successfully completed over 50 research studies with the collaboration of National and International agencies like PARC, Agriculture Price Commission, FAO, World Bank, and UNDP, etc. The research conducted has been published in the form of monographs and research reports. Some of the major beneficiaries of the research studies include farming community, Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Planning Commission, Agri. Prices Commission, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of Punjab, Pakistan Agri. Research council, Ministry of Rural Development, etc Also .the faculty has published  a significant number of research papers in the national and international journals of repute.

 

 The department has developed a methodology for Crop Insurance to enhance the continuity of production process and protect the farming community against natural and economic hazards. The department is also carrying out studies on Comparative economic advantages of alternative agricultural production activities in the various ecological zones under different technological levels and land tenure systems. Analysis of economic efficiency of alternative production uses of country’s scarce resources: land, capital and water is on the agenda of departmental research.

 Following are the major areas of research of the department.

           i. Self-reliance based on comparative advantage

           ii. Food security of rural poor.

          iii. WTO with special reference to agreement on agriculture

              (AoA)

         iv. Liberalization of Agricultural Trade and promotion of

             Agricultural export through Comparative

             Advantage.                             

          v. Economics of small farmers

         vi. Land, water and poverty issues.

        vii. Women participation   in Agriculture Development

        viii. Rural Development and community issues.

 

Research Projects underway

 

    1.     “Comparative advantage and competitiveness of major crops in Pakistan-Price Risk Analysis” Principal Investigator: Dr. Muhammad Siddique Javed.

   2.      Impact of World trade Liberalization on the production and Exports of Kinnow: Problems and Prospects. Principal Investigator: Dr. Asghar Ali

   3.      Factors affecting Price Variability in commercial Broiler meat production in Faisalabad. Principal Investigator: Mr. Mukhtar Ahmad Arif

      4.      An investigation into Economics of energy use on small farmers by different cropping zones by irrigated Punjab. Principal Investigator: Dr. Sultan Ali Adil.

   5.      Factors affecting price variability in commercial broiler meat production in Faisalabad.
