DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

       The department of Farm Management (FM) was operating under the faculty of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology and established in 1963. Its core objective was to teach and research in the subject of Farm Management.  Initially department was offering courses for under graduate and MS students only.  In 1989 department introduced a Ph.D. program.  So for seventy eight M.Sc. and three Ph.D. have been produced and they are well established in their profession while other two Ph.D. are on their way.  With the changing scenario of the economy it is decided to re-organize the faculty of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology in 2004.  Like other departments in the faculty, the department of Farm Management changed to Environmental and Resource Economics (ERE).

       In the first semester of the first year four M.Sc. and three Ph.D. students enrolled in the department.  It is expected that in the coming year department will significantly attract a larger number of students.

The department under the title of Farm Management contributed significantly in the field of research.  The department got a significant number of projects on merit basis and submitted the report for each project on time.

Currently department is running three different projects under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Bashir Ahmad.

The department “Environmental and Resource Economics” (ERE) will play a vital role to fill the gap of availability of human resources that are required to manage our environment, and natural resources.  The general goals of the department are,

1.      To serve as an advocate to the general public for Natural Resource Education, emphasizing its importance, and the kinds of programs and resources available

2.      To ensure that both formal and non-formal educators have ready access to Natural Resource Education source materials and programs

3.       To encourage formation of partnerships and facilitation of communication among all parties that share the Vision for Natural Resource Education, thereby making it more likely that participants build upon the professional work of others.

Beside these general objectives and generating competent human resources, department will also focus on research mainly emphasizing to improve natural resource management and enhancing environmental quality. The major emphasize is to develop policy suggestions from the outcome of different empirical studies about,

  1. Enhancing environmental quality and improving the sustainability of resource systems;

  2. Providing guidelines to reduce water shortage in the country through proper management of available water resources in the country;

  3. Developing ecosystem improvement programs consistent with enhanced biodiversity;

  4. Reducing soil erosion and improving water quality and;

  5. Creating educational programs that address the integration of resource needs with the carrying capacity of natural resources.
