The Department
of Zoology came into being as a result of bifurcation from the Department of
Entomology just after the inception of the University in 1961. Later, in 1982,
it was renamed as the Department of Zoology and Fisheries to extend the scope
and area of its activity to include the discipline of Fisheries.
After the creation of the
Faculty of Sciences and with the shifting of the Department of Entomology to the
New Campus, the building of the Department of Entomology fell to the share of
this department which continues to be housed in the same building to this day.
This building comprises two lecture rooms, 8 postgraduate well-equipped research
laboratories, one seminar room, one computer room and 7 other rooms to serve as
offices of the teaching staff. The office rooms which operate into an outside
verandah constitute the face of the building which puts up an elegant and
impressive look due to its being a good model of the architectural design of the
old days of the British rule. The Natural History Museum of the Department,
without doubt, is one of the best in the country. |
