     Department of Veterinary Microbiology

Dr. Iftikhar Hussain (Professor & Chairman)

VISION
In order to sustain livestock and poultry health through the technologies developed in the different sections, this Department is playing very important role in the economy of University and the Country as well.

MISSION
The Department of Veterinary Microbiology would play a key role in the forth coming WTO sanctions on all the food and Veterinary products. The research activities of this Department will provide the stairs to the industry and farmers for improving profitable production of poultry and dairy animals by the application of latest technology, skilled manpower and proper diagnostic techniques.

Action Plan

 Section

Short Term Plans

Medium Term Plans

Long Term Plans

Bacteriology and Mycology

·      Isolation and identification of pathogenic bacteria and fungi from livestock and poultry

·      Bacterial serotyping and their molecular typing

·      Preparation of vaccines from the indigenous isolates of bacteria & fungi and to compare them with the imported ones.

·   Suggest immunization programmes of bacterial vaccines

·   Development of pen-side diagnostic tests

·   Training of undergraduate and Post graduate students

·   Rendering diagnostics facilities to livestock and poultry farmers

·   Development of culture bank for different bacteria and fungi

·   Preparation of antisera against different bacteria and fungi

·       Production of enzymes

·                           Commercializing these vaccines and enzymes

Biotechnology

·        To upgrade the existing research and education by integrating biotechnology.

·        To introduce postgraduate and post-doctoral courses in biotechnology.

·        Development of recombinant techniques, cell and protoplast fusion, enzymes, proteins and nucleic acid manipulations, animal tissue and cell culture, cloning of beneficial genes, embryo transfer technology and fermentation technology for large scale production of vaccines.

·   To emphasize molecular approaches in vaccines and sera production and in development of diagnostics.

·   To strengthen capabilities cloning bacterial and viral genes.

·   To introduce genetic engineering as a regular feature of animal improvement.

·   To offer short courses in biotechnology for in-service veterinarians and for public awareness.

·   This section will be unique from others in the sense that it will have a lot of emphasis on direct application of biotechnology to veterinary vaccines and biologics. Also it will train manpower for research institutes like NARC, NIBGE and NIAB.

·   To establish Veterinary Biotechnology Reference laboratory in the department.

Virology

·      Isolation and Identification of indigenous viruses

·      Preparation of vaccines from the indigenous isolates of viruses and to compare them with the imported ones

·  Suggest immunization programmes of viral vaccines

·  Development of diagnostic kits

·  Development of subunit vaccines for different important viral diseases

·  Training of undergraduate and Post graduate students.

·  Rendering diagnostics facilities to livestock and poultry farmers.

·      Studying the emerging viral diseases of livestock and poultry

·      Commercializing the viral vaccines so far evaluated experimentally on mass scale.

Immunology Vaccinology and Epidemiology

·      Vaccine evaluation

·      Development of diagnostics

·      Development of new immunological techniques.

·   Evaluation of new adjuvants and antigen delivery systems.

·   Production of monoclonal antibodies and development of hybridoma technology.

·     Production of sera in the laboratory animals.

·     Reference immunology laboratory will be established to evaluate vaccine and for flock titration to standardize the vaccination schedules for livestock and poultry.

·       Surveillance and monitoring of the currently prevailing diseases in country

·        Investigations of the zoonotic diseases

·        Descriptive epidemiological studies will be conducted to know the frequency, distribution and economic losses of infectious diseases of livestock and poultry. Ranking of diseases will be done on the basis of data obtained.

·     To study the possible means of transmission

·   To study the sero-prevalence of infectious disease in animals

·   Analytical epidemiological studies will be conducted to identify the risk factore of the important diseases of livestock and poultry. Molecular epidemiological studies will also be performed to investigate the similarity/ variation among the causative agent of the diseases.

·   To study the occurrence and character of diseases in populations and the means for their prevention

·   To establish bioclimatograph about different diseases

·   Prospective information would be displayed for public based upon the retrospective knowledge.

·   Strategies and recommendations will be made for the control and eradication of important diseases.
