Department Overview

This department was established in 1962. The department of Physiology and Pharmacology is one the basic department in the faculty of veterinary science. The department is making instructional efforts in two field i.e Veterinary Physiology and Veterinary Pharmacology. It is providing necessary know how of the normal functions of the animal body and basic concepts regarding the Pharmacology of drug and medicine in veterinary practice to the students perusing basic degree in Veterinary Science. The courses at this level have been designed to develop understanding on general and pharmacological basis of metabolism, endocrinology, neurology, physiological chemistry and drug actions and uses. The department is also actively engaged in imparting teaching and research at postgraduate level. At this level all the basic areas of both fields are addressed in greater detail. The research activities have been focused on problem of practical importance likely problems related to digestive physiology, hematology, drug disposition and pharmacokinetic in indigenous animals species under indigenous environmental conditions, moulting of spent birds, hormonal profile of chicken, buffalo and camel at different physiological states, macro and micro minerals estimation in animals, drug residues studies in food animals, pharmaceutical and chemical toxicity studies. The studies are also carried out for screening and pharmacological evaluation of indigenous medicinal plants. The courses of study are subjected to frequent critical review.

 The department has produced seventy (70) M.Sc. and five (05) Ph.D scholars so far. This department has enjoyed the distinction of attracting students from National elite institutions. The faculty members of this department have made significant contribution in their specific fields of specialization. It is also a matter of great pride and honor that in recognition to their services rendered to livestock and poultry industry, the members of this department has been decorated with prestigious awards like “Izaz-e-Fazilat” from Government of Pakistan. “National Award” from Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA), Star Award, Gold Medal and Cash prize from Academy of Medical Sciences for excellence in research.
