DURATION AND REQUIREMENTS OF THE
COURSE/SEMESTER
1.
(i) The duration of the course for the Degree of M.Sc.(Hons)./M.
Phil./M.S, in full residence, shall not be less than four semesters and more
than eight semesters for whole-time students. For University employees
admitted as part time students, the duration shall not be less than six
semesters and more than ten semesters.
(Explanation: In case a student fails to complete his/ her degree
within four semesters, he/ she will be called in fifth semester to indicate
the progress of his/ her studies and provide justifications for delay in the
completion of studies).(Syndicate 4.11.04)
(ii) The employees of the government/ other agencies nominated for
M.Sc(Hons)./M.Phil./M.S. degree at this University, shall have to take study
leave to pursue studies as a regular student, failing which he/ she shall
not be admitted.
(iii) The supervisors of M.Sc.(Hons)./M.Phil./M.S. students shall
submit a report with regard to each M.Sc.(Hons)./M.Phil/M.S. student showing
general progress particularly in research, such report shall be submitted on
prescribed form (GS/13) after each semester to the Advanced Studies and
Research Board through the Chairman of the Department/ Dean concerned.
(iv) The medium of instruction and examination shall be English.
2.
(i) There will be 2 semesters in each year, Winter and Spring, of 19
weeks each. The commencement of the semesters shall be regulated by the
Academic Council.
(Explanation:
Out of 19 weeks, 16 weeks shall be actual teaching time, the rest may be
utilized for admission, enrolment, conduct of examinations, preparation,
declaration of results, etc.).
(ii) There will also be a summer session of 8 to 10 weeks each year
as part of an academic year which shall be optional. Students, who desire to
take up deficiency courses as approved in their course work programmes,
failed courses and the courses in which they are allowed to improve 'C'
grade under the rules, may enroll during this session. It shall not count
towards residential requirements.
3.
The subjects of study for the
M.Sc.(Hons)./M.Phil./M.S. examination are given in schedule II. This
schedule may be amended from time to time.
4.
A student admitted to the course
M.Sc.(Hons)./M.Phil./MS leading to Ph.D. shall be required to undertake the
following course work:
(i) He/she shall take not less than 30 credits out of which 24
credits will be reserved for course work which may lead to the award of
M.Sc.(Hons.)/M.Phil./M.S. or equivalent degree.
(ii) Nearly two-third of the credits for the course shall be in the
major field of study, and one-third in the minor fields of study; on the
basis of the minimum requirements. The minor fields may be one or two but
shall not exceed three. If more credits are taken under major and minor
courses, then the ratio of two third and one third shall not apply in such
cases.
Explanation: The ratio of one third and two third shall not apply to credits
taken over and above the minimum requirements of 24 credits. The number of
minimum credits under major and minor courses will be 16-8.
(iii) The
following courses shall be compulsory
a) Statistics shall be compulsory for all the
students except M.Phil.(Basic Sciences)
b) Soil Physics shall be compulsory for the students of the Faculty
of Agri. Engg. & Technology except those of the Deptt. of Fibre Technology
and Institute of Food Science and Technology
c)
Biochemistry shall be
compulsory as a deficiency course for students of all faculties except those
of Faculty of Agri. Economics and Rural Sociology, Sciences, Division of
Education and Extension, and the disciplines of Fibre Technology.
d) Software
Applications-I and Operations Research shall be compulsory for all the
students of the Faculty of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology.
e)
Computer programming shall
be compulsory for the students of the Faculty of Agri. Engineering &
Technology except those of the Departments of Fibre Technology and Institute
of Food Science & Technology. These compulsory courses may be counted as
deficiency or under major and / or minor fields as the Supervisory Committee
may decide. |
