Examinations
(a) Tests and Examinations
18. (i) There shall be two examinations for each course
during each semester. These examinations shall be termed mid-semester and
final. In addition to these examinations the teacher shall give home
assignments, term papers, quizzes, etc. The determination of the form of
these examinations will be left to the teacher who will be solely
responsible for the conduct of examination as well as evaluation in his
course. The grade given in the course by the teacher shall be final.
(ii) Only
those students who have attended not less than 75 per cent of lectures and
practical, separately, in each course, shall be eligible for admission to
such examinations.
(ii)
A teacher shall report
to the Dean/Director/Principal concerned through the Chairman of the
Department/Sectional Head concerned the names of students who are absent
from the lectures/practical continuously for seven days to enable him/her to
strike off such students.
(Explanation:
The Dean/Director/Principal may re-admit such a candidate or refuse
admission if the reasons advanced are not convincing).
19. The final
examination for a semester shall be held on a date and time and place to be
notified by the teacher in advance.
20. To pass a
deficiency course a student shall be required to obtain at least grade C.
21. The scripts
of the final examination shall be made available to the students to see by
the concerned teacher, taken back and then forwarded to the Controller of
Examinations within ten days, who shall preserve the scripts for a year.
22. (i) The mid-semester examination shall be held during
9th week of the semester which shall carry 30 per cent of the total
allocated marks for the course. This examination shall be held by the
teacher concerned who shall determine the form of the examination.
(ii) In addition, quizzes, special home assignments and/or term
papers shall carry 10 per cent of the total marks allocated which shall be
uniformly split over the whole semester. The final examination to be held at
the end of the semester shall carry 60 per cent of the total marks
allocated.
(iii) For the purpose of evaluation, one credit will
carry 20 marks e.g. a five credit course will carry 100 marks. These marks
will be divided in accordance with the credits assigned to theory and
practical for each course.
23.
The following weight
age shall be given to the examinations, home assignments, term papers, etc.
(i)
Seasonal work/Examination:
Mid-semester
examination 30%
Home assignments/term paper/quizzes
10% 40%
(ii) Final Examination of the
course 60%
(Covering the entire course)
Total: 100%
24.
In order to qualify in
the examination of a semester, a student must obtain at least 20 per cent
marks separately in (i) Seasonal Work/Examination(s), as well as (ii) Final
Examination. In other words, for cumulative passing, the essential condition
will be the attainment of at least 20 per cent marks in each part. It will
also be essential to pass separately in the practical work.
25. The teacher
shall send the final award list for the course to the Controller of
Examinations, and a copy each to the Dean/Director/Principal of the
Faculty/Division/Institute/ College, Chairman of the Department
concerned and the Director, Advanced Studies, normally within Ten days after
the end of the semester(Syndicate dated 4.11.04.)
26. On receipt
of the award lists, the Controller of Examinations shall prepare a
consolidated award sheet and send it to the Director, Advanced Studies and
Dean/Director/Principal and the Chairmen of the Departments concerned.
27. A student,
who has taken the final examination of an approved course at the end of a
semester, shall not be permitted to delete the course.
28. A student
who fails to make up the deficiency in his/her grade point average, in the
number of chances permitted, shall cease to be on the rolls.
(b) Grade Point Average
29. Grade point
will be as follows: A for 4, B for 3, C for 2 and F for failure (that is
zero).

grade point average for obtaining M.Phil. Degree : 2.75
Equivalence between letter grading and numerical grading shall be as
follows:

(Explanation:
The student should obtain GPA/CGPA of 2.75 for enrolment to the next
semester. In case a student is able to obtain GPA/CGPA of 2.25, or more but
less than 2.75, he/she will be allowed to enroll in the next semester, but
only once, and he/she will be given a warning to improve his/her GPA/CGPA
and if he/she fails to obtain 2.75 in the next semester, his/her admission
shall stand cancelled.
30. A student,
who obtains CGPA of 2.25 or more but less than 2.75 upon the completion of
entire approved course work, may be allowed to repeat once the courses
of the previous semesters in which he/she had obtained the lowest grades
in order to improve the CGPA so as to obtain the minimum of 2.75 failing
which he/she shall cease to be on the rolls.
(c) Comprehensive Examination
31. A student
admitted to the course shall take a comprehensive examination, within two
semesters after he/she has successfully completed the approved course
work.
(Explanation: The comprehensive
examination shall be arranged within 10 weeks of the termination of
each regular semester. A student will have to apply for comprehensive
examination on the prescribed form at least two months before the
examination. If a student does not apply within the specified period or does
not appear in the examination, he/she will be deemed to have availed one
chance and failed to qualify in the first attempt).
32. The
comprehensive examination will cover the entire fields of study and will
consist of a written part followed by an oral part. It will be designed to
ascertain whether the student has attained sufficient knowledge and the
intellectual maturity necessary to become a successful scholar in his/her
chosen discipline. It will not be a mere re-examination of previous courses
but will test the students' ability to integrate and assimilate the
knowledge obtained from the courses, seminars and independent studies.
33. Examiners
for the comprehensive examination shall be appointed by the Vice Chancellor
from the persons proposed by the Board of Studies.
34. To pass the
comprehensive examination, a student must obtain not less than 60 % marks in
each written paper and in the oral part, separately. A fraction in the total
marks in either case shall be counted as one mark.
35. A student
shall not be eligible to sit in the oral part, unless he/she has qualified
in the written part of the Examination.
36. An
application for admission to examination or for re-examination shall be
submitted on the prescribed form.
37. If a student fails to qualify
either in the written or oral part of the comprehensive examination, he/she
shall be eligible to offer himself/herself again in the part in which he/she
failed, but only once and that also not earlier than three months and not
later than 12 months after the date of the declaration of the result of the
examination.
38. A student
who has passed the comprehensive examination shall be deemed to have become
a candidate for admission to M.Phil. degree.
(i)
Comprehensive Examination - Written Part:
39. The
Controller of Examinations shall, with the approval of the Vice Chancellor
notify the date, time and venue of the examination at least two weeks before
the commencement of the examination.
40. The Board
of Examiners for written comprehensive examination shall be appointed by the
Vice Chancellor from amongst the teachers. The Vice Chancellor shall
designate one of the members to act as Chairman of the Board.
41. The written
comprehensive examination shall comprise of at least 2 papers in the fields
of study to be prescribed by the Board of Studies of the Department.
42. A student
shall answer questions set by each member on a separate answer book which
shall be sent by the Controller of Examinations to the member concerned for
evaluation.
43. Each member
shall, within seven days after the receipt of the answer books, return them
duly marked to the Controller of Examinations alongwith the award list.
44 To pass the
written examination a student must secure not less than 60% marks in
the set
of questions asked by each member separately.
(Explanation: If a
student fails in two or more papers, he/she will be re-examined in all the
papers as covered in regulation No.37. If a student fails in one paper,
he/she will re-appears only in the failed paper in the next coming
examination. In case he/she again fails, the student would have to appear in
all the papers as covered in regulation No.37.)
(ii) Comprehensive Examination - Oral Part:
45. After
qualifying the written comprehensive examination, the candidate shall be
required to appear in oral examination within 2 months of the declaration of
the result of the written comprehensive examination. If a candidate fails to
appear in oral comprehensive examination within the prescribed time limit,
the result of the written comprehensive examination shall stand cancelled
and he/she shall have to appear again in the written comprehensive
examination. The oral examination shall be conducted by the Board of
Examiners appointed under regulation 40 and the Chairman of the Department,
Dean of the Faculty or his nominee, and Director, Advanced Studies or his
nominee. If a member other than the Chairman of the Board of Examiners is
not available, the Vice Chancellor may nominate another person in his place.
46. The
Chairman of the Board of Examiners shall be responsible for the conduct of
the oral examination and shall determine the order in which each member of
the Board shall put questions to the student. The members shall be free to
ask any number of questions.
47. At the
conclusion of the oral examination, the student shall be declared to have
qualified or not qualified and the Chairman of the Board of Examiners shall
forward the award lists to the Controller of Examinations. In case of a
split decision, the majority decision shall be final.
(d) Thesis Examination
48(1). The unbound
thesis shall be referred to the external examiner for evaluation after the
student has passed all the final examinations in the approved courses and
has fulfilled the residential requirement. The Supervisory Committee will
certify that the contents and form of the thesis are satisfactory.
48(2). The thesis
shall be evaluated by a Board of Examiners comprising members of the
supervisory committee and one external examiner, appointed by the Vice
Chancellor out of the panel of five names recommended by the Board of
Studies. At least three members of the Board of Examiners of whom one must
be an external examiner shall, for the purpose of evaluating the thesis,
hold a viva-voce
examination and such other tests as they may consider necessary. The
external examiner shall be given reasonable time to go through the contents
of the thesis critically. The viva voce examination would be conducted at
least after one week of the receipt of thesis by the external examiner. The
evaluation will be made according to the following numerical as well as
letter grades:
(a)
There shall be 300 marks corresponding to 15 credit hours allocated for
thesis which may be divided as under:
(i)
Seventy five marks for
the evaluation of technical knowledge of the topic as well as general
knowledge about the subject of the degree programme.
(ii)
150 marks for the
subject matter of the thesis such as originality and justification of
research, quality of data, interpretation of data, conclusion drawn and
achievements of the objectives of the research.
(iii) Seventy five marks for technical
aspects of presentation such as consistency, illustrations, diagrams,
references, English grammar, vocabulary and quality of typing.
(a)
The marks so awarded
will be converted into letter grades by the prescribed formula which shall
be A, B, C or F, as the case may be. Average grade on the basis of Course
Work and Thesis will then be worked out to calculate the final CGPA.
(c) The thesis evaluation will be
conducted within six months from the date of dispatch of thesis from the
office of Controller of Examinations to the quarters concerned, failing
which the student will be declared fail in the thesis examination. However,
the Vice Chancellor may allow upto one year in hardship cases (Syndicate
12.3.05)
48(3). In case of
disagreement between the Supervisory Committee and the External Examiner
regarding the acceptance of the thesis, it shall be referred to another
external examiner whose decision shall be final.
48(4). If the
thesis, submitted by a candidate for final evaluation, is proved to be
copied/plagiarized at the time of viva-voce examination, it will be liable
to be rejected on the report of Board of Examiners. The Controller of
Examinations will declare the candidate fail in thesis examination. The
admission of such a candidate shall be cancelled and he/she shall not be
readmitted to M.Phil. under any circumstances.
48(5). If the
thesis of a candidate is proved to be plagiarized after its evaluation and
declaration of result, previous result of the candidate will be cancelled
and he/she will be declared to have failed in thesis examination, Such a
candidate shall not be readmitted to M.Phil. under any circumstances.
IV. Examination fee
49. University
examination fee shall be charged at the time of registration for each
semester.
V. General
50. A candidate
who fulfilled all the requirements prescribed for the course shall be
awarded the Degree of M.Phil.
