DURATION AND REQUIREMENTS
OF THE COURSE/SEMESTER
1. (i)
The duration of the course for the Degree of Master of Science, in full
residence shall not be less than four semesters and more than six semesters
for whole-time students and not less than six semesters for the University
employees admitted as part time students.
(ii)
The duration of the course for
the degree of Master of Science, in partial residence shall not be less than
six semesters.
(iii) The medium of instruction and examination shall be English.
2. (i)
There will be 2 semesters in each year, Winter and Spring, of 19 weeks each.
The commencement of semesters shall be regulated by the Academic Council.
(Explanation:
Out of 19 weeks, 16 weeks shall be actual teaching time, the rest may be
utilized for admission, enrolment, conduct of examinations, preparation,
declaration of results, etc.).
(ii) There will also be a summer session of 8 to 10 weeks each year
as part of an academic year which shall be optional. Students, who desire to
take up deficiency courses as approved in their course work programmes,
failed courses and the courses in which they are allowed to improve "D/C"
grade under the rules, may enroll during this session. It shall not count
towards residential requirements.
3. The
subjects of study for the M.Sc. Examination are given in schedule I. This
schedule may be amended from time to time. The candidate must, in addition
to completing his approved Course Work, present an acceptable thesis on the
basis of his approved programme of research.
4. A
student admitted to the course shall be required to undertake the following
course work:
(i) He/she
shall take not less than 45 credits(55 in case admitted to Statistics and 60
in Computer Science of course work excluding the credits required for
rectifying course deficiency, if any, in at least four semesters. These
credits will include 10 credits of research.)
(II)
Nearly two-third of the
credits for the course shall be in the major field of study, and one-third
in the minor fields of study; on the basis of the minimum requirements; the
minor fields may be one or two but shall not exceed three. If more credits
are taken under major and minor courses, then the ratio of two-third and
one-third shall not apply in such cases.
(Explanation:
The ratio of one-third and two-third shall not apply to credits taken
over and above the minimum requirements of 35 credits. The number of minimum
credits under major and minor courses will either be 24 and 11 or 23 and 12.
Moreover, in the subject of Computer Science the ratio of major and minor
courses will be 33 and 17 or 34 and 16 respectively.
(III) The
following courses shall be compulsory:
(a) Statistics
shall be compulsory for all students.
(b)
Bio-chemistry shall be compulsory as deficiency course for students of all
the Faculties except those of the Faculty of Agri. Economics and Rural
Sociology, Division of Education and Extension, Department of Mathematics
and Statistics, Department of Physics & Meteorology, Faculty of Agri. Engg.
& Technology (except the Department of Fibre Technology and Institute of
Food Sciences &Technology).Basic Instrumentation course shall be optional as
deficiency course for all faculties.
(c) "Software Applications-I" and "Operations Research" shall be
compulsory for all the students of the Faculty of Agricultural Economics and
Rural Sociology.
(d) A 4 credit course entitled `Survey and Research
Report' shall be compulsory for all students (not taking thesis research) of
the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
These
courses may be counted as deficiency or under major and/ or minor fields as
the Supervisory Committee may decide.
