Examinations
(a) Tests and
Examinations
19. (i)
There shall be two examinations for each course during each semester. These
examinations shall be termed mid-semester and final. In addition to these
examinations the teacher shall give home assignments, term papers, quizzes,
etc. The determination of the form of these examinations will be left to the
teacher who will be solely responsible for the conduct of examination as
well as evaluation in his/her course. The grade given in the course by the
teacher shall be final.
(ii) Only those students who have attended not less than 75 per cent
of the lectures and practicals separately in each course, shall be eligible
for admission to such examinations.
(ii)
A teacher shall report to the
Dean/Director/Principal concerned through the Chairman of the
Department/Sectional Head concerned the names of students who are absent
from the lectures/practicals continuously for seven days to enable him/her
strike off such students.
(Explanation: The Dean/Director/Principal may re-admit such a
candidate or refuse admission if the reasons advanced are not convincing).
20. The final
examination for semester shall be held on a date and time and place to be
notified by the teacher in advance.
21.
To pass a deficiency course a
student shall be required to obtain:
(i)
marks prescribed in the
regulations relating to the under-graduate examination concerned if the
deficiency course is of Ist and 2nd year level otherwise at least grade C;
(ii) grade C, if the deficiency course is of post-graduate level.
22. The
scripts of each examination shall be given to the student concerned by the
teacher, taken back immediately and then forwarded to the Controller of
Examinations within ten days, who shall preserve the scripts for a year.
23. (i)
The mid-semester examination shall be held during 9th week of the semester
which shall carry 30 per cent of the total allocated marks for the course.
The examination shall be held by the teacher concerned who shall determine
the form of the examination.
(ii)
In addition, quizzes, special
home assignments and/ or term papers shall carry 10 per cent of the total
marks allocated which shall be uniformly split over the whole semester. The
final examination to be held at the end of the semester shall carry 60 per
cent of the total marks allocated.
(iii) For the purpose of evaluation, one credit will carry 20 marks
e.g. a five credits course will carry 100 marks. These marks will be divided
in accordance with the credits assigned to theory and practical for each
course.
24. The
following weightage shall be given to the examinations, home assignments,
term papers, etc.
(i)
Sessional work/Examinations:
Mid-semester
examination 30%
Home assignments/term papers,
quizzes. 10% 40%
(ii) Final examination of the course
(Covering the entire
course) 60%
Total:
100%
25.
In order
to qualify in the examination of a semester, a student must obtain at least
20 per cent marks separately in (i) Sessional Work/ Examination(s), as well
as (ii) Final Examination. In other words, for cumulative passing, the
essential condition will be the attainment of at least 20 per cent marks in
each part. It will also be essential to pass separately in the practical
examination.
26 The teacher
shall send the final award list for the course to the Controller of Examinations,
and a copy each to the Dean/Director/Principal of the Faculty/Division/
Institute/ College, Chairman of the Department concerned and the Director,
Advanced Studies, normally within ten days after the end of the
semester (Syndicate dated 4.11.04).
27. On receipt
of the award lists, the Controller of Examinations shall prepare a
consolidated award sheet and send it to the Director, Advanced Studies and
Dean/Director/Principal and the Chairmen of the Departments concerned.
28. A student,
who has taken the final examination of an approved course at the end of a
semester, shall not be permitted to delete the course.
29. A student
who fails to make up the deficiency in his/her grade point average, in the
number of chances permitted, shall cease to be on the rolls.
(b) Grade Point
Average
30. Grade
point will be as follows: A for 4, B for 3, C for 2, D for 1 and F for
failure (that is zero).
Maximum
grade point average : 4.00
Minimum
grade point average for
obtaining
Master's Degree : 2.50
Equivalence between letter grading and numerical grading shall be as
follows:

(Fractions will be rounded to the nearest whole
number).
Explanation:
(a) At the end of the first semester, student must obtain a minimum
grade point average (G.P.A.) of 1.75 to be promoted to the second semester.
(b)
In case a student is able to
obtain GPA of 1.50 or more but less than 1.75, he/she will be promoted to
the second semester on probation.
(c)
At the end of the second
semester, a student must obtain a minimum cumulative grade point average (C.G.P.A.)
of 1.75 and must also pass at least 50 per cent of the courses taken by
him/her in order to be promoted to the third semester. If any of the
preceding two conditions is not fulfilled by a student, he/she shall cease
to be on the rolls.
(d) A student will be required to repeat those courses of the
previous semesters in which he/she had failed, at the first available
opportunity, provided that his/her maximum work load, including the courses
being repeated by him/her, will not exceed the normal work load.
(e) At the end of the third and subsequent semesters, the C.G.P.A. of
a student should not be less than 2.00, otherwise he/she shall cease to be
on the rolls.
(f) A student, who cannot maintain the GPA/CGPA requirements in
accordance with regulation and ceases to be on the rolls, may seek fresh
admission alongwith other candidates, on merit, but only once.
31. A student,
who obtains CGPA of 2.00 but less than 2.50, upon the completion of entire
approved course work, may be allowed to repeat once the courses of the
previous semesters in which he/she had obtained the lowest grades, in order
to improve the CGPA so as to obtain the minimum of 2.50, failing which
he/she shall cease to be on the rolls.
(c) Thesis
Examination
32. A student
shall be entitled to submit thesis for examination after he/she has passed
all the final examinations in the approved courses and has also fulfilled
the residential requirements.
33. The thesis
shall be prepared and presented in the manner laid down in the instructions
approved by the Advanced Studies and Research Board from time to time. It
shall be accompanied by a research paper and an abstract embodying results
of the thesis.
34. The
unbound thesis shall be referred to the examiner for evaluation duly
certified by the supervisory committee that the contents and form of the
thesis are satisfactory for submission.
35.
The thesis shall be evaluated
by a Board of Examiners comprising members of the supervisory committee and
one external examiner appointed by the Vice Chancellor from the persons
proposed by the Advanced Studies and Research Board out of the panel of
names recommended by the Board of Studies. At least three members of the
Boards of Examiners of whom one must be an external examiner shall for the
purpose of evaluating the thesis, hold a viva voce examination and such
other tests as they may consider necessary. The external examiner shall be
given reasonable time to go through the contents of the thesis critically.
The viva voce examination would be conducted at least after one week of the
receipt of thesis by the external examiner.
36. The thesis
shall be evaluated by the Board of Examiners according to the following
numerical and letter grades:
(a) There shall be 200 marks corresponding to 10 credit hours
allocated for thesis and these may be divided as under:
(i) Twenty five percent marks will be reserved
for the evaluation of technical knowledge of the topic as well as general
knowledge about the subject of the degree programme.
(ii) Fifty percent marks will be reserved for the subject matter of
the thesis such as the originality and justification of research, quality
of data, interpretation of data, conclusions drawn and achievements of the
objectives of the research.
(iii) Twenty five percent marks will be reserved for technical
aspects of presentation such as consistency, illustration, diagrams,
references, English grammer, vocabulary and quality of typing.
(b) The marks so
awarded will be converted into letter grades by the prescribed formula
which shall be A, B, C, D or F as the case may be. Average grades on the
basis of course work and thesis will then be worked out to calculate the
final CGPA.
(a)
The award of thesis
examination should be sent after making sure that the suggested improvements
have been made in the thesis, and certificate to this effect on the award
list is given by the supervisor. The Controller of Examinations should not
notify the result of the student until he receives corrected, bound copy of
thesis with the certificates of the supervisor (Syndicate 12.3.05.)
37.(i) If a candidate fails in the thesis
examination, he/she may enroll again and submit a revised thesis on
payment of the prescribed examination fee but he/she shall not be entitled
to resubmit his/her thesis the expiry of six months after the date of
declaration of the result of the last thesis examination. He/she can avail
of this chance only once.
(ii)
The thesis evaluation will be conducted within six months from the date of
dispatch of thesis from the office of Controller of Examinations to the
quarters concerned, failing which the student will be declared fail in the
thesis examination. However, the Vice Chancellor may allow up to one year in
hardship cases(Syndicate dated 12.3.2005).
38. In case of
disagreement between the Supervisory Committee and the External Examiner
regarding the acceptance of the thesis it shall be referred to another
external examiner whose decision shall be final.
39. The
subject approved for thesis research shall remain valid only for 8 semesters
from the date of admission of the candidate to the course. The Advanced
Studies and Research Board may, however, relax this condition for special
reasons to be recorded.
40.
A student admitted to the
course in partial residence shall undertake research work in a laboratory or
institute approved by the Syndicate on the recommendations of the Academic
Council and Advanced Studies and Research Board.
41.
If the thesis, submitted by a
candidate for final evaluation, is proved to be copied/ plagiarized at the
time of viva-voce examination, it will be liable to be rejected on the
report of Board of Examiners, the Controller of Examinations will declare
the candidate fail in thesis examination. The admission of such a candidate
shall be cancelled and he/she shall not be readmitted to M.Sc. under any
circumstances.
42.
If the thesis of a candidate
is proved to be plagiarized after its evaluation and declaration of result,
previous result of the candidate will be cancelled and he/she will be
declared to have failed in thesis examination. Such a candidate shall not be
readmitted to M.Sc. under any circumstances.
IV. Examination fees
43. University
examination fees shall be charged at the time of registration for each
semester.
V. General
44. A candidate who passes all the examinations
with the prescribed C.G.P.A. shall be awarded the Degree of Master of
Science/Master of Science (Hons.).
