Ambassador of EU Delegation Mr. Lars-Gunnar Wigemark & Canadian High Commissioner Greg Giokas visited UAF and had a meeting with Vice Chancellor UAF Prof. Dr. Iqrar Ahmad Khan along with Deans and Directors of the varsity at New Syndicate Hall here on Friday. Mr. Lars-Gunnar Wigemark while addressing the meeting stressed the need for joint collaborative efforts among various countries through a consortium in order to cope with food security future challenges. He said that EU was providing assistance to Pakistan in the field of Horticulture particularly branding of Multan “Mango” and Sargodha “Kinnow” in order to shift the financial benefits to the farming community at large. He added that UNIDO had been striving for reduction of post harvest losses and development of value addition mechanism in agricultural sector of Pakistan.

The University of Agriculture Faisalabad has set up Forest, Range Management and Wildlife College in Layyah in order to foster the forest and wildlife knowledge among the dwellers at their doorstep. Punjab Agricultural Minister Ahmad Ali Aulakh along with UAF Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad on Thursday performed the groundbreaking ceremony of the sub-campus comprising 1,600 acre. The minister said it is first Forest College in Punjab and second in the country after the Forest College in Peshawar.

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has urged students to work hard, get modern education and play their role in the country's development and progress. The University of Agriculture Faisalabad and the Commonwealth Agricultural Bureau International (CABI) inked a Memorandum of Understanding to establish the Plant Diagnostic Window to provide quality information and analyze the diseases, pest management, and nutrient deficiencies of plants to the farming community. Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Wednesday laid the foundation stone of University of Agriculture Faisalabad’s sub campus Burewala

He was flanked by Provincial Agricultural Minister Malik Ahmad Ali Aulakh, Secretary Agriculture Azmat Ali Ranjha, UAF Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan and local political figures. The Punjab government has already provided 153 acres to the university to establish a sub campus here. Currently, the university will start functioning at Regional Agricultural and Economic Development Centre (RAEDC), Vehari. The classes will begin from September this year.

South Africa clinched the title of 5-day International Tent Pegging Competition held at University of Agriculture Faisalabad after defeating Pakistan B and Pakistan A in the final round of International Lance Pegging. Pair Lance Pegging won by Martiens and Charl of South Africa followed by Tenna and Jenna, and Gerald and Michal of Great Brittan. Shehbaz Qamar and Chaudhry Rashid won the Sward Pegging Pair Competition followed by Amjad Bhatti and Hussain Abbas. Sward Masters Competition won by Direc and Martin of South Africa, followed by Annas and William of SA, and Khan and Khizar of Pakistan.

International Tent Pegging begins

The University of Agriculture Faisalabad on Friday kicked off five-day International Tent pegging Competition, first of its kind, in which teams from England and South Africa are participating. As many as more than 500 players from the three countries are showing their expertise in front of large gathering.
The formal inaugural ceremony of this international event will be held today (Saturday) in which UAF Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad will be chief guest while Commissioner Faisalabad Tahir Hussain will be the guest of honor. Currently, two international tent pegging competitions are being organized across the globe one in UAF, Pakistan and other one in India. Women tent pegging players from England and South Africa are also taking part at the competition.

The 4th 6-day workshop on strengthening extension skills of young professionals in Afghanistan and Pakistan kicked-off at University of Agriculture Faisalabad aiming at further strengthen the participatory extension skills in working with farmers. The trilateral workshop of USA, Afghanistan and Pakistan is an outcome of understanding between the leadership of three countries to make the agriculture a way forward and an instrumental key to give an impetus to socio-economic development of both the neighboring countries. During the six-day workshop organized by Office of Research, Innovation, and Commercialization (ORIC) UAF, numerous US experts including Dr. Jim Hill, Dr. Chelo Abrenilla, Jerry Peters, Chuck Schuster, Pannkuk Chris, Louise forguson, Grant Dewell, Jacquline Wilson, and Andrew Robertson from seven US institutions were delivering lectures to the participants of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

A state of the art Centre of Remote Sensing for Agro Informatics would be set up at University of Agriculture Faisalabad to train the officials of crop reporting survey of the provincial government and will put its trickle down effects at farmer’s level. The announcement was made during a meeting of Mr. Jan Dempewolf Assistant Research Professor, Department of Geographical Science, University of Maryland, USA and Mr. Jon Nording (UMD) with UAF VC Prof. Dr. Iqrar Ahmad Khan (SI) to discuss the execution details of FAO-USDA joint project of remote sensing program here at UAF Syndicate Room on Thursday morning. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) will fund the proposed centre that would be executed by FAO and University of Agriculture Faisalabad jointly.

University of Agriculture, Faisalabad has developed a new variety of Brassica oilseed (Desi Sarson) with the potential of 30-40 mounds per acre yield and maturity time 4-months. This would become a milestone for self-sufficiency in edible oil in the country.
