Faculty of Animal Husbandry - History

As a result of the recommendations of Food and Agriculture Commission in 1960, some radical changes were made in the organizational set up of the provincial departments of Animal Husbandry resulting in the establishment of Directorate of Livestock Farms and Veterinary Research Institutes. These were established with the mandate to conduct research in the field of animal production and health. Very soon, the importance of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science in their independent capacities was seriously realized in the field of Livestock sector. Of course, this step was factual realization of the future needs of the country in its best interest. As a result of this, a new Faculty of Animal Husbandry was set up separately from the Faculty of Veterinary Science to impart animal husbandry education distinct from veterinary education in the newly created University of Agriculture at Faisalabad.

The Faculty of Animal Husbandry since its inception in 1962, started offering postgraduate degree program leading to M.Sc. (Hons.) and PhD in the fields of Animal Breeding and Genetics, Livestock Management, Animal Nutrition and Poultry Husbandry. However, it was felt that the veterinary graduates undertaking M.Sc./PhD courses did not have enough knowledge of animal husbandry disciplines. Hence they were unable to understand the animal husbandry subjects at higher level. Moreover, the wealth of knowledge both in veterinary and animal husbandry fields has increased so tremendously that it has become difficult to impart purposeful instructions in these fields simultaneously in a blended form. The teaching of animal husbandry and veterinary science to the same students does not permit him to gain sufficient insight in any of these areas. As a matter of fact, during the present age of specialization, it cannot possibly be expected from an individual to concurrently discharge both duties (Veterinary and Animal Husbandry) unless one field is allowed to suffer at the cost of the other. At the same time, government of Pakistan stressed the need of initiating a separate degree program to boost up the production of livestock in the country to cater the food needs of ever increasing population of the country.

With this background, the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad decided to institute a degree program of B.Sc. (Hons.) Animal Husbandry at the Faculty of Animal Husbandry. This degree program is spread over a period of four years after F.Sc. (Pre-Medical) and the students are taught production courses viz. Animal Breeding and Genetics, Animal Nutrition, Livestock Management, Poultry Husbandry as major subjects; while in addition to courses on Animal Reproduction, Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry and Medicines are included. These graduates are also taught courses on Range Management. Fodder/Agronomy, Agricultural Extension, Agricultural Marketing, Agricultural Economics, Farm Machinery and Power and Rural Sociology etc.
